Long-distance relay race planned, latest in growing number of similar events

Warren County is starting to develop a niche as a destination for hard-core runners and bicyclists.
With two major bicycle races, a triathlon and "warrior run" becoming fixtures in recent years, the county is now being targeted by the organizers of a nationwide running race who want to host a race locally and bring thousands of competitors to the area one weekend next fall.
Representatives of the "Ragnar Relays" series of races are organizing a race that will include the Lake George region during late September or early October next year, county officials. Organizers have reached out to the county Department of Public Works for guidance in establishing a course.
Public Works Superintendent Jeff Tennyson said it was his understanding that the race course would stretch from Saratoga County to Lake Placid, with a base of operations in Lake George. Tennyson said he understood they wanted to use the Beach Road area as a hub.
In the Ragnar Relay series, teams of 12 racers take part in legs of running on a course of 200 miles or so, with the teams running overnight until the race is done. Team members who aren't running follow in chase vehicles until it is their turn to run.
"You and 11 of your closest friends running 200(ish) miles, day and night, relay-style, through some of the most scenic terrain North America could muster," the Ragnar website reads.
The organization's website lists 15 races in a variety of locations around the country, including one that stretches from the New York City area to the Catskills and another from Connecticut to Boston. It bills itself as the "largest overnight relay series in the nation" with an estimated 40,000 runners expected to take part in its races.
Courtney Mitchell, Ragnar's director for the race, said it will be named the "Adirondack" race and will likely attract 250 or so 12-person teams to the area for the weekend event.
The races are for both hard-core athletes and others just looking for a fun weekend.
"It's a really fun race," she said. "We encourage costumes, funny team names, teams decorating their vehicles."
Mitchell, a Poughkeepsie-area native, said she vacations frequently in the Lake George and Saratoga regions and believed the area would be a great place for a race. It will replace the downstate race.
"It's going to be an unbelievably beautiful course," she said.
Mitchell said local municipal officials who would like to work with the group as the event is planned can contact her at 914-475-7479.
"There definitely is an economic impact for the towns we go through," she said.
Emily Ransom, a spokeswoman for Ragnar, said course details were still being worked out.
Kate Johnson, the county's tourism director, said she was trying to get details of the event. She said the county Tourism Department has been trying to capitalize on the interest from bicycle and running races that the region has generated.
"I'm so pleased that our region is on the radar for these outdoor contests," she said.
Johnson said Tanya Brand, the Tourism Department's group tour promoter, has met with numerous representatives of outdoors-related contest events like races when visiting tourism events around the country.
