187-Mile Adventure-Fest in Memory of Co-worker with Cancer
SEATTLE, WA | July 20, 2007 - The people at Ragnar Events, LLC have put on many relay races over the years. But their newest race, the Ragnar Relay Northwest Passage, from Blaine to Langley, WA, is a bit more meaningful than the rest.
On June 15th, 2007 Christine Brimley, passed away after a courageous fight with Colon Cancer. Christine was a close friend to many at Ragnar Events, LLC. She participated in many of their events and she even started to work part time drumming up sponsors and participants. As a result of Christine’s diagnosis and subsequent death Ragnar Events, LLC has made an astonishing break with their normal policies.
“Usually our relay races benefit children's charities in the area surrounding the race. But considering Christine’s illness and subsequent death we decided to make a temporary break with that policy. This year the Northwest Passage, our newest race, will earn money for Colon Cancer Awareness,” said Dan Hill, Co-Founder of Ragnar Events, LLC. “We want to do our part to support her. She may have passed on, but she didn’t have to, and she wanted people to know it.”
Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer in the nation. It kills 60,000 people a year and yet it can be prevented with a simple screening. Christine’s story is perfect demonstration of this point.
When Christine was 34, she experience bleeding and she thought it was hemorrhoids, but tests showed no hemorrhoid bleeding. Because she was so young she ruled out colon problems. She died four years later. The reality is that if she had just had a colon screening she would be alive today. Hill and the rest of Ragnar Events, LLC hope they can have a part in helping others avoid Christine’s fate.
“Her wish was that her story could raise awareness for others. The money we are raising will have that effect,” says Hill.
