NordicTrack Corporate Challenge

Corporate teams have been drawn to our races from year one because they offer an excellent way for coworkers to get to know each other and develop teamwork skills.

Picture this. It's 3:15 AM you're standing about 50 yards from the Mississippi River wearing a headlamp, reflective vest, running clothes, and running shoes. You're on what is typically a high-traffic road, but the town is asleep. The only headlights you see belong to race vehicles with wacky sayings like "Run like you wish you could!" and "Injured runner? Need a lawyer?" painted on the side. You're surrounded by about a dozen other runners. Some of them are doing jumping jacks to warm up, others are drinking coffee trying to wake up. One guy is wearing some strange looking chicken hat. You're a bit sleepy but you're pretty sure you just heard him ask you if you wanted to pet his chicken. You look at him; he's actually holding a rubber chicken. You politely decline. Moments later you hear a race official yell "Number one-fourteen, team 'Google One’, is approaching!" You look up the road and see a headlamp bouncing toward you. Here comes your teammate; two days ago she was just your boss. You think to yourself “I'm way too tired for 5 miles right now”. You take the hand-off and start your 5 miles. She just pulled her weight now it's your turn.

If you can picture this you're beginning to get a small glimpse of what the NordicTrack Corporate Challenge is all about. And we guarantee that no matter how long you work for that man/woman that handed off to you, you will never look at him/her the same way again.

Changes to the Challenge
Until now the Corporate Challenge has just been another division within each race. But we've teamed up with NordicTrack this year and we are taking the corporate challenge to a new level. We want to see more rivalries. We want to see tears when companies lose! We want to see companies hiring lazy dim-witted employees only because they want them on their Ragnar Relay team! We want to see executives going to work in dresses for losing! We want to see restaurants catering corporate parties for other restaurants as punishment for losing! We want to see investment deals that are contingent on the outcome of the race!

To help this happen we are going to add special categories within the NordicTrack Corporate Challenge. Categories will be industry specific. As of right now we have added the following categories:

  • Law Firms
  • Accounting Firms
  • Sports and Fitness
  • Technology
  • Food and Beverage
  • Healthcare
  • Journalism
  • Prizes
Categories are winner-take-all. The winner of each category will receive a custom 12" cup. Their team name and company name will be engraved on the cup and it will be theirs to display proudly in their office for one year. The following year it will be up for grabs again and a new engraving will be made to the cup.

At least two teams must compete in each category. We may add other categories in the future depending on demand. If you would like to recommend a category or if you have questions about which category you belong in please contact Christine Brimley at christine@ragnarrelay.com. Soon after your corporate team registers Christine will contact your team captain to help him/her plan for the race. Christine will also help your captain determine your team’s category.

There will also be an overall NordicTrack Corporate Challenge winner. This winner will receive special prizes from NordicTrack.

    Good luck with the challenge!

Featured Team - Women Off Piste

Women Off Piste, captained by Christine Brimley, has run the Wasatch Back two years in a row. Their group formed when they discovered that early morning runs were a good way to bond while doing something they loved. They get together 4-5 times a week and enjoy every minute of it.

We asked Christine about her most memorable Ragnar Relay moment and this is what she said, "During the 2005 Wasatch Back we had 12 Barbie’s mounted to our vehicles. Each Barbie represented a team member and each was posing in a wacky position. Throughout the race many teams asked if they could take pictures with our van. The excitement our Barbies generated was a lot of fun and allowed us to meet many other race participants. After one particular exchange we returned to our van and discovered that one of the Barbies was missing. In it's place we found a note telling us to slow down if we ever wanted to see her again. Unwilling to yield, we continued on our journey. A couple of hours later we were startled to see sirens blaring and lights flashing as a police officer pulled us over. The officer walked up to our drivers window and asked the driver to exit the vehicle. Once she got out of the van he handed her a photograph and a note. The note read 'Barbie is a little scared but she is doing ok. She wants to come home. If you want to see her again leave 6 bottles of gatorade at the next exchange'. The photo, taken only an hour or two earlier, showed a man with a pair of black running shorts over his head. He was holding a knife to Barbie's throat. The team that had taken Barbie for ransom somehow managed to find time to take the picture, develop it, and recruit a police officer to deliver it. At the next exchange we happily left 6 empty bottles of Gatorade, but Barbie didn't show up. We waited desperately for the return of Barbie but by the end of the race we realized she wasn't coming home."

Despite the warnings and ransom notes, Women Off Piste finished first in the Women's division and 9th overall. And don't worry; months after the Wasatch Back Barbie was returned safely home.

Of her team and their first place finish Christine says, "There's nothing special about us, we're just wives and mothers". We think they are great examples of dedicated women who embody the Ragnar spirit. Awesome job ladies!
